to the point where I don't really mind the busywork. It's true that the game can get incredibly tedious (especially if you don't focus on getting the medals on the first go at stages, since you'll eventually have to replay them sooner or later), but just the game's incredibly cool vibes make it easy to get lost exploring the hubs, the levels, talking with each location's NPCs, etc. Just like with the locations themselves, the music also varies wildly from place to place, and you'd be hard pressed to find a bad one in here.īoth of these things add greatly to the vibes of the game, which is probably the main reason why I love Unleashed. It's not uncommon for even the worst Sonic games to have at least a few catchy tunes, and with Unleashed they went all out. Every location in the game is nothing short of gorgeous, and they're all so different from each other that it really does make you feel like you're travelling around the world And well, the music is nothing short of incredible either. To this very day, it still is the best looking Sonic game out there, and with just increasing its resolution and framerate you'd be left with something that could perfectly pass off as an 8th generation game. The thing is, even taking the "bad" half into account, there's still a LOT to love about Unleashed, like the game's art and music. That said, after recently replaying the game, I can't say I actually think these sections are bad and I do feel like they've been affected by internet hyperbole a bit as an example I found the non-Sonic playstyles in Sonic Adventure 2 more annoying than the Werehog. The game's framerate is also at its most unstable here, and with the genre switch it's not really a surprise these sections weren't well liked by people, especially when the best part about them is definitely the music for each stage - something that you likely won't be hearing a whole lot since the the battle theme plays for every single enemy. Were wolfhog Sonic, with the game now turning into a Hack & Slash game like Devil May Cry or the old God of War. While in the stages that take place during the day are full of the high-speed bright action you'd expect from a Sonic game, the ones that take place during the night feature. Let's start by addressing the elephant in the room: Unleashed's criticisms were largely aimed at a part of the game, or to put it less favourably, half of it. More than a decade since its release, it has more or less developed a cult following of sorts, with many (including me) arguing that Unleashed is one of the, if not the very best Sonic games out there despite being one of the lowest points of the franchise in terms of critical reception. If you've heard of Sonic Unleashed, or remember something about what reviewers had to say about it in 2008, it might surprise you to learn that there's actually quite a few people that hold the game in high regards.
